Dr Ligang Song, Director of the China Economy and Business programme, The Australian National University
About the topic:
The Forum will discuss China’s response to the Global Financial crisis, and its effects on China’s interaction with the international economy.
China ’s economic growth suddenly slowed in the second half of 2008, as international credit markets froze and world trade slumped. The authorities responded with the largest monetary and fiscal expansions of any economy in the current global recession, and probably of any economy ever. Real economic activity has responded strongly to the stimulus. The main questions are about longer term effects of stimulatory policies.

- How have those on low incomes fared?
- What has happened to household wealth in recent years, and for who has it increased most and least?
- What are the sources of growth in wealth? How much has been in housing, superannuation, shares or changing debt levels?
