2009 HILDA User Training

The HILDA Data User Training is now full. If you are still interested in the training, we can add you to a waiting list which will work on a first-come-first-served basis if a vacancy becomes available.

The HILDA Data User Training will be held from 9.00am – 5.00pm on the three days just prior to the 4th HILDA Survey Research Conference. Professor Steve Pudney (one of the keynote speakers at the HILDA conference) will present the majority of the course on panel data analysis techniques. Members of the HILDA team will provide an introduction to the HILDA data and documentation. There will also be a hands-on Stata lab.

Date: Monday 13 – Wednesday 15 July 2009
Time: 9.00am – 5.00pm
Venue: The University of Melbourne, Room 308, Economics and Commerce Building, Level 3, 198 Berkley St, Parkville.
Cost: $595 (includes GST)

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

The aims of the course are:

  • Introduce the distinctive features of panel data
  • Review some panel data sets commonly used in social sciences
  • Present the advantages (and limitations) of panel data, and consider what sort of questions panel data can(not) address
  • Show how to handle and describe panel data
  • Introduce the basic estimation techniques for panel data
  • Discuss how to choose (and test for) the right technique for the question being addressed
  • Discuss interpretation of results

The topics covered include:

  • Basic introduction to panel data
  • Introduction to statistical modelling (within and between group analysis, random effects, endogeneity)
  • Further modelling techniques (depending on the interest of the group but possibly including dynamic models, analysis of categorical / discrete data, attrition and sample selection issues)
  • Introduction to HILDA data and documentation

Pre-requisites:

  • Some knowledge of linear or logistic regression
  • Some experience using Stata (if you have not used Stata before, you will need to do so before the course begins)

Please register early as places are limited and are secured on a first-come-first-served basis. Delegates need to register for and attend all three days. To register, please complete the conference registration form (the HILDA User Training is under Section E).

Further enquiries regarding the HILDA User Training may be directed to the HILDA Administrative Assistant, Nicky Auster, at (03) 8344 2108 or email hilda-inquiries@unimelb.edu.au.

For queries regarding the 4th HILDA Survey Research Conference, please contact the Functions Manager at melb-conf@unimelb.edu.au.

If you have a sufficiently large number of users (at least 15) who are interested in training, we may be able to conduct a special training session for you. A registration fee will apply. Please contact Nicole Watson to discuss your request.
