Changes to the data made between Release 1.0 (Oct 2002) and Release 2.0 (Jan 2004)

Wave 1 file changes

Changes are to wave 1 files only as these were the only files in existence at that time.

Cleaning

• Corrections to HF relationship grids and family type variables found during wave 2 fieldwork
• Removed 3 children from 1 household as they were correctly recorded in another household.
• Corrected wave 1 age and sex inconsistencies found during wave 2 fieldwork

Corrections in calcalations

• Where mixture of years and months given, years additively calculated for
  aehtjb 'DV: D3a Time in paid work (years)'/
  aehtuj 'DV: D3b Time unemployed, looking for work (years)'/
  aehto 'DV: D3c Time other than working or unemployed (years)'/.
• Corrected calculation of H22/H23 Days/nights spent with non-resident parent {for per 4 week period *13 ( *12 had been used)}
• Corrected calculation, division by 52 not 12 for aehtuj D3b Time unemployed, looking for work (years)
• Highest level of education AEDHIGH : Some nurses with diplomas incorrectly set to Bachelors degree. Of 142, 113 now 'Undetermined'
• Family type: A small number of dependent students were incorrectly classified as non-dependent children
• Time lived in first defacto relationship (aordflt). Where mixture of years and months given, years additively calculated
• Income model and tax model completely revised. Release 1.0 income derived variables should be discarded.
• Per cent of financial year not in the labour force (acapnlf) now calculated for students (if not working and not unemployed)

New variables

• aoifref 'G33a Sources of payments received - Refused' and aesempst ‘D10 Type of employee/employer’ had been dropped from the person dataset. Now supplied
• Added 4 new duration of living arrangement variables
• aorcdur 'DV: Current defacto duration (years)'.
• amrcdur 'DV: Current marriage duration (years)'.
• amrwdur 'DV: Current widowed duration (years)'.
• amrsdur 'DV: Currently separated duration (years)'.

Renamed variables

• D12 aujmtu renamed to aujwku (as question asks weeks, not months), 'weeks' and 'year' appended to D12 labels
• Renamed variables in both files which had 2-digit suffixes to 2-letter suffix to allow for changes in questions over waves. This affects 652 HQ variables (questions Q4 Q7 Q8 Q10) 216 PQ variables and 83 SCQ variables (see attached table)

Documentation corrections

• Typographical error "arg11_12" corrected to "arg12_11" in marked-up relationship grid (Household Form)
• F2 Job search methods. Types of activity variable names ajsact06 to ajsact11 misnamed in Codeframe (incorrect number)
• Incorrect label in Rperson dataset (not documentation) for aujljt (label said ' occupation', now 'last employer')
• HF: Age variables incorrectly labeled in marked-up Household Form, ahfagt1 to ahfagt become ahgfage1 to ahgfage12
• First home owners (ahspown), codes swapped in codeframe (not marked up questionnaires)
• Family type (ahhfty01-ahhfty12) calculation codes 28,29, 99 listed in the codeframe are not in use in provided data
• Household expenditure on rent and groceries (axpgroc, axpfood, axposml and ahsfa) had inappropriate “Don’t Know” values (9999).
• Documentation and frequencies updated to reflect changes above

Self completion questionnaire

• 2 late-arriving SCQs added and matched to person dataset: (16810, 08765)
• New match for an SCQ (03750) which had been set to unmatched while awaiting clarification on handwritten correction to the person id
• Question B9, alslanh (neighbours helping each other out) and alsland (neighbours doing things together). Corrected variable names which had been swapped in supplied data.
