HILDA User Training 2005

Please note that the HILDA User Training is now fully booked. There are no more places available.

On Wednesday 28 September 2005, prior to the two-day HILDA Survey Research Conference, we will be conducting a one-day user training session. The aim of the training is to arm new HILDA users with knowledge about the survey and data, along with some practical experience, so you are more comfortable using the data on your own. The training will be held at the University of Melbourne and will be limited to 70 participants. The training will run from 9am to 5pm.

In the morning of the user training session, we will cover the following topics:

  • Overview of the questionnaires, sample design, and fieldwork
  • Datafiles, documentation, and conventions
  • Derived variables - primarily the family, education, history, income, and tax variables
  • Imputation and weighting
  • Things to watch out for when using the data
  • Data quality issues
  • Where to go for more information

The afternoon will provide you with some hands-on experience with some data. We will be running two computer labs; one using SPSS and one using SAS. Both labs with be staffed by members of the Melbourne Institute HILDA data team and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the data.

You will be provided with a copy of the training slides used. You should bring along a copy of the HILDA User Manual as this will be referred to during the day.
